Pro-active corrosion control with Hamilton Arc sensors to protect high-value assets
Industry: Building Maintenance Services
Application: Monitoring conductivity and dissolved oxygen in hot & cold water systems
Hamilton products: Conducell 4USF Arc, VisiFerm DO Arc
Hot and cold water systems are integral to all types of buildings. The medium used for heat or cold transfer is typically untreated water or water with inhibitors, depending on the application. Various piping materials, such as steel or copper, are used to convey the liquid, along with aluminum and brass in components like valves and heat exchangers. High levels of oxygen are a known contributor to metal corrosion, particularly iron and steel, in commercial heating and cooling systems. Corrosion can lead to system failures requiring expensive remedial actions, such as cleaning, flushing, or replacing parts or the entire system.

Benefits of VisiFerm DO Arc and Conducell 4USF Arc
- Robust and stable readings, requiring infrequent calibration
- No electrical interference from other plant room equipment
- Easy maintenance and long sensor lifetime
- Simple calibration with data stored in the sensor head
For instance, pipe failures in a hospital can result in ward closures or the cancellation of surgeries. These shutdowns can be avoided by monitoring dissolved oxygen content and liquid conductivity. Increased dissolved oxygen levels indicate potential leaks, poor installation, or inadequate maintenance. Simultaneously measuring conductivity helps determine corrosion inhibitor concentrations. Insufficient inhibitor levels lead to corrosion, while excessive amounts waste resources. Maintaining proper inhibitor concentrations is essential.
