Thermocouples > 09 - Homogeneous Circuit Law

“The thermal emf, developed in a thermoelectric circuit of two different metals, with their junctions at temperatures T1 and T2, is independent of the temperature gradient and its distribution along the wires”. In other words, the measured emf depends solely and exclusively on the chemical composition of the two metals and the temperatures at the junctions.

An example of the practical application of this law is that we can have a large temperature variation at any point along the thermocouple wires, but this will not influence the emf produced by the temperature difference between the joints. Therefore, temperature measurements can be made at well-defined points with thermocouples, since what is important is the temperature difference between the joints.
