The product

High-Performance Thermocouple Wire from Metivo, part of BASF Group, is engineered for superior thermal measurement in demanding industrial settings. It includes Type S, R and B thermocouples, renowned for their stability at temperatures from 1400 °C to 1750 °C, and Platinel® thermocouples, which offer increased service life and enhanced calibration stability. That is why industries rely on these wires in continuous process control, metallurgy, chemical production and beyond.

How High-Performance Thermocouple Wire works

Metivo manufactures the wires in single batches for performance consistency. In addition, the wires are calibrated to ISA, ANSI or IEC standards, ensuring accuracy within ±0.25% between 400 °C and 1450 °C.

Type S thermocouple: Pt vs. Pt 10 Rh

One of the most popular and widely used precious metal thermocouple combinations, known for its high accuracy over a broad temperature range. The combination has excellent mechanical and chemical properties and low electrical resistivity. In addition, it is readily obtainable in uniform quality and in very fine diameters.

Type R thermocouple: Pt vs. Pt 13 Rh

This widely used combination is almost identical to Type S. The difference is a slightly higher thermoelectric output, which accommodates instruments that have been calibrated for this output.

Type B thermocouple: Pt 6 Rh vs. Pt 30 Rh

This widely used thermocouple is very similar to other Pt and Rh combinations. However, it performs well at the higher application temperatures where other combinations may be subject to accelerated drift or physical degradation. It is also unique in that, at reference junction temperatures below 100 °C, compensating lead wire is generally not necessary: plain copper conductors are adequate.

Platinel®

A development by Metivo, Platinel® brings together the high electrical output of the high base alloys with the oxidation resistance and stability of the precious metals. That is why it is often used as a direct replacement for Type K in process control applications where long life, stability and continuous trouble-free performance are required.

Reference grade

Designed for high-accuracy temperature measurement and calibration applications. Reference grade wire features tighter compositional control and enhanced EMF stability. This makes it suitable for laboratory use, process validation, and critical semiconductor or glass furnace calibration.

Standard grade

Optimized for routine industrial temperature monitoring and process control. Standard grade wire meets international tolerance standards and offers a cost-effective solution for continuous operation in demanding environments such as metals processing, petrochemical, and mature semiconductor furnace applications.

Applications

Designed for industrial operations where reliable high-temperature measurement is critical:

  • Metal processing: thermocouples monitor furnace and crucible temperatures to optimize metal quality and energy use.
  • Semiconductor manufacturing: high-purity thermocouple wire supports accurate wafer processing and doping operations.

Key advantages

  • High-temperature capability up to 1750 °C
  • Precision calibration per international standards
  • Long-term stability and low drift
  • Single-batch wire production for uniform performance
  • Recycling and metal reclamation options

Metivo offers end-of-life recycling programs for thermocouple wire, reclaiming precious metals like platinum and rhodium. Customers can receive monetary value or credit toward future wire purchases. This way, the program supports circularity and cost-efficiency in metal-intensive industries.
